A massive Oregon ranch, spanning more than 37 square miles and located in the remote corners of Wheeler County, is up for sale. Known as the Stanley Ranch, this sprawling property, which has been in the Steiwer family for over a century, is now being listed for $34.95 million.

The Stanley Ranch, formerly the Steiwer Ranch, is only the second time in more than 120 years that this diverse and historically rich property has been available, according to Ryland Moore of Live Water Properties, the listing agent.

Moore describes the ranch as an opportunity for those looking for it all—from running a cattle operation to enjoying a large saloon and even a helicopter hangar. The ranch’s extensive equestrian trails allow for horseback riding across its vast landscape without ever covering the same ground twice.

Already, Moore has received interest from affluent buyers, including individuals with a passion for preserving ranches as part of a conservation legacy, similar to renowned landowners like Ted Turner. “It’s not every day you find a property of this size at such an affordable price per acre,” Moore shared.

The new owner will control nearly an entire watershed, stretching from its headwaters to the John Day River, with diverse biomes that provide habitat for a wide range of plant and animal species. Moore emphasizes the significance of this property as one of the last large, uninterrupted landscapes in the West.

Since its last change in ownership in 1999, the ranch has undergone various restoration projects. The current owner sold off about 10,000 acres but has maintained a commitment to soil and water restoration, leaving behind 24,020 contiguous acres for sale.

The ranch is not just a working property but an authentic piece of Western history. It’s home to ancient rock art and pictographs, with sites considered some of the largest and best-preserved in the region. These hidden treasures make the ranch not just a beautiful natural space but an archeological gem as well.

The property, which can support up to 600 mother cows per year, also offers significant income potential, including a grazing lease on nearby Bureau of Land Management land and valuable water rights dating back to the 1880s.

With diverse terrains, ranging from 1,100 to 3,900 feet in elevation and 26 miles of rivers and streams, the ranch is also marketed as a “sportsman’s paradise” for fishing and hunting enthusiasts.

Located just two hours from Bend, the property includes a main house, a bunkhouse, and several outbuildings. The 3,600-square-foot saloon and a well-maintained indoor riding arena are among the ranch’s many entertaining features. A pond with a gazebo allows for fishing, swimming, or relaxing by the fire pit.

For those looking to expand, two additional adjacent properties—the 5,430-acre R&C Ranch and the 3,246-acre Seven Springs Ranch—are also for sale, offering the opportunity to add even more land and riverfront property to this already extraordinary offering.
